1.Environmental protection grade Mag hydroxide reacts with phosphate to form insoluble magnesium phosphate (Mg₃(PO₄)₂) or struvite (MgNH₄PO₄·6H₂O), achieving rapid phosphorus removal. 2.Environmental protection grade Mag hydroxide Compared with lime (Ca(OH)₂), Mg(OH)₂ has a milder increase in pH when dissolved, reducing the need for subsequent neutralization and making it suitable for the treatment of sensitive water bodies. 3.Environmental protection grade Mag hydroxide Struvite can be formed in ammonia-containing wastewater and recovered as slow-release fertilizer to achieve the resource utilization of phosphorus.

Non-corrosive Magnesium Hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂) is increasingly being explored as an effective agent for dephosphorization—the removal of phosphorus from wastewater, industrial effluents, and even agricultural runoff. Here’s how it works and its advantages:


Mechanism of Dephosphorization with Mg(OH)₂

1.Precipitation:

  • Non-corrosive Magnesium Hydroxide reacts with phosphate ions (PO₄³⁻) in water to form insoluble magnesium phosphate (Mg₃(PO₄)₂) or struvite (MgNH₄PO₄·6H₂O) in the presence of ammonium.

  • The reaction can be represented as:

3Mg(OH)2+2PO43−→Mg3(PO4)2↓+6OH−

  • In wastewater containing ammonia:

Mg(OH)2+NH4++PO43−+6H2O→MgNH4PO4⋅6H2O↓+OH−

2.Adsorption & Coagulation:

  • Non-corrosive Magnesium Hydroxide generates micro flocs that adsorb the phosphates leading to better results.

  • Also the high pH resulting from dissolution of Mg(OH)₂ favors phosphate precipitation with other metals (e.g. calcium, iron).


Advantages of Using Magnesium Hydroxide

  • PH Buffering: Unlike lime (Ca(OH)₂), Mg(OH)₂ does not drastically raise pH, reducing the need for post-treatment neutralization.

Application

1.Wastewater Treatment:

Town and industrial waste waters such as those coming from a factory of food processing or from a farm livestock operation.

3.Struvite Crystallization:

Magnesium hydroxide also is a member of the chemical agents used in the recovery of nutrients while at the same time anaerobic digestion effluent is produced.
